Direct and Indirect Questions

Hello, cat lovers!

Today, I'm going to explain the difference between a direct and an indirect question. Are you ready for this? I hope you are!

Let's start!

Direct Question: a type of question that's asked in an informal context (most part of the time).

Indirect Question: a type of question that's asked in a formal context.

Let's take a look at the following photo and then compare the examples below:

This is Lobito. He's a kitty I rescued in December.

Direct Question:
Where's Lobito?

Indirect Question:
Could you tell me where Lobito is?

Which question sounds more formal to you?
The second one, right? That's correct!

That being said, a good way to differentiate when you can use a direct or an indirect question is by considering the context.

Ask yourself the following:

Do you want to sound polite/formal?
Then, you should use an indirect question to ask something.

Are you in an informal context or do you know the person you want to ask something?
Then, you can ask a direct question.

Easy, isn't it? 😉
